| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of John C. "Jack" Rain of Alton, who passed | ||||||
| 4 | away on January 7, 2014; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, John Rain was born on September 25, 1923; he was | ||||||
| 6 | the son of the late Clifford C. and Eleanor (nee Rice) Rain; he | ||||||
| 7 | married the former Betty M. (nee Benz) Haycraft on December 27, | ||||||
| 8 | 1946 in Alton; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, John Rain graduated from Alton High School; he | ||||||
| 10 | subsequently graduated from the University of Missouri - | ||||||
| 11 | Columbia, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, John Rain served as a staff sergeant in the United | ||||||
| 13 | States Army during World War II; he was captured during the | ||||||
| 14 | Battle of the Bulge on December 23, 1944 and remained | ||||||
| 15 | imprisoned until April 4, 1945; and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, John Rain was the co-owner of the family grocery | ||||||
| 17 | store, Rain and Rain Grocery; he began working at the store at | ||||||
| 18 | age 8 and continued working until his retirement in 1989; and
| ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, John Rain was a longtime member of Elm Street | ||||||
| 20 | Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder; he | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | was also a member of College Avenue Presbyterian Church in | ||||||
| 2 | Alton; and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, John Rain was a member of the A-Men Group of Alton | ||||||
| 4 | High School, the Alton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1308, the | ||||||
| 5 | Shriners International, and a founding member of the North | ||||||
| 6 | Alton Business Men Group (now the North Alton Godfrey Business | ||||||
| 7 | Council); and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, John Rain was preceded in death by his parents; | ||||||
| 9 | his daughter-in-law, Kathie Rain; and his brother, William | ||||||
| 10 | "Bill" Rain; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, John Rain is survived by his wife, Betty; his | ||||||
| 12 | sons, John C. Rain, Jr. and Daniel C. Rain; his grandchildren, | ||||||
| 13 | Rachel (Nick) Catanzaro and John Clifford Rain III; his | ||||||
| 14 | great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Noah Catanzaro; and his | ||||||
| 15 | sister-in-law, Nadine Rain; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 16 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 17 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his | ||||||
| 18 | family and friends, mourn the passing of John C. "Jack" Rain; | ||||||
| 19 | and be it further
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 21 | presented to the family of John Rain as an expression of our | ||||||
