| 2 |     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to  | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Robert E. Manning, Jr. of Peoria, who  | ||||||
| 4 | passed away on July 22, 2013; and
   | ||||||
| 5 |     WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was born on November 16, 1931,  | ||||||
| 6 | in Peoria, to Robert E. and Catherine Irene (Gorman) Manning;  | ||||||
| 7 | he graduated from the Spalding Institute in 1949, where he  | ||||||
| 8 | captained the football, basketball, and baseball teams during  | ||||||
| 9 | his senior year and was selected as an all-city quarterback in  | ||||||
| 10 | 1948; he attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated  | ||||||
| 11 | from Bradley University in 1953, lettering in varsity baseball  | ||||||
| 12 | at both schools; he married Lois M. Wilson in Oshawa, Ontario,  | ||||||
| 13 | Canada, on April 25, 1953; and
   | ||||||
| 14 |     WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. continued his baseball career  | ||||||
| 15 | beyond  high school and college; he played collegiate summer  | ||||||
| 16 | leagues in Madison, Wisconsin; Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada;  | ||||||
| 17 | and Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; he played professional baseball  | ||||||
| 18 | from 1953 to 1954 for the Cleveland Indians and the New York  | ||||||
| 19 | Giants organizations in Peoria (Peoria Chiefs); Tampa,  | ||||||
| 20 | Florida; and Olean, New York; and | ||||||
| 21 |     WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. graduated from the University  | ||||||
| 22 | of Notre Dame Law School in 1960 and practiced law in Peoria  | ||||||

  | |||||||
| 1 | from 1960 to 1977; he was assistant State's Attorney in Peoria  | ||||||
| 2 | County from 1960 to 1967 before being appointed State's  | ||||||
| 3 | Attorney from 1967 to 1968; he was selected as an associate  | ||||||
| 4 | circuit judge in the 10th Circuit and a circuit judge in 1980;  | ||||||
| 5 | he retired in 1997; and
   | ||||||
| 6 |     WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was a member of many civic and  | ||||||
| 7 | professional associations, including the Peoria County Bar  | ||||||
| 8 | Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, the American  | ||||||
| 9 | Judicature Society, the Illinois Judges Association, the  | ||||||
| 10 | Spalding and Peoria Notre Dame High School Booster Clubs, the  | ||||||
| 11 | University of Notre Dame National Monogram Club, the Notre Dame  | ||||||
| 12 | Club of Peoria, the Bradley University Letterman and Chiefs  | ||||||
| 13 | Club, the Landmark Racquet & Health Club, Knights of  | ||||||
| 14 | Columbus-Spalding Council, and the Benevolent and Protective  | ||||||
| 15 | Order of Elks Lodge #20; and | ||||||
| 16 |     WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was a member of St. Bernard  | ||||||
| 17 | Catholic Church and served on the finance committee; and | ||||||
| 18 |     WHEREAS, Following the passing of his first wife, Robert  | ||||||
| 19 | Manning, Jr. married Rosemary Donnelly Crowley on March 24,  | ||||||
| 20 | 2001; and
   | ||||||
| 21 |     WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. was preceded in death by his  | ||||||
| 22 | first wife, Lois; his brother, Paul; and his sister, Sharon  | ||||||

| 1 | O'Shaughnessy; and
   | ||||||
| 2 |     WHEREAS, Robert Manning, Jr. is survived by his wife,  | ||||||
| 3 | Rosemary; his children, Michael Manning, Lauren (Tom) Donlan,  | ||||||
| 4 | Linda Manning, Angela (Dan) Aeschliman, Robert (Kristen)  | ||||||
| 5 | Manning, James Manning, and Paul (Katie) Manning; his 18  | ||||||
| 6 | grandchildren; his 8 great-grandchildren; his numerous  | ||||||
| 7 | cousins, nieces, and nephews; his step-children, Karen (Bob)  | ||||||
| 8 | Metzinger, Debi (John) Redington, James (Gail) Crowley,  | ||||||
| 9 | William III (Laura) Crowley, and John (Chris) Crowley; his 13  | ||||||
| 10 | step-grandchildren; and his 2 great-step-grandchildren;  | ||||||
| 11 | therefore, be it

| 12 |     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL  | ||||||
| 13 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of  | ||||||
| 14 | Robert E. Manning, Jr. and extend our sincere condolences to  | ||||||
| 15 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it  | ||||||
| 16 | further
   | ||||||
| 17 |     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be  | ||||||
| 18 | presented to the family of Robert Manning, Jr. as an expression  | ||||||
