| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Margery W. Steele, who passed away on | ||||||
| 4 | June 20, 2013; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Margery Steele was born on July 17, 1920, in | ||||||
| 6 | Michigan City, Indiana, to George and Marion (nee Whiteley) | ||||||
| 7 | Phelan; she graduated from Kingston High School in Kingston, | ||||||
| 8 | New York, and attended New York City Business College; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Margery Steele worked for the War Department in | ||||||
| 10 | the Office of Strategic Services, which later became the | ||||||
| 11 | Central Intelligence Agency; she served in North Africa, Egypt, | ||||||
| 12 | and Greece; she married Harold Steele on October 12, 1946, in a | ||||||
| 13 | civil ceremony, followed by a military ceremony in Vienna, | ||||||
| 14 | Austria on October 13, 1946; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Margery Steele was an active member of First | ||||||
| 16 | Congregational Church of Peru and a past member of Dover | ||||||
| 17 | Congregational Church; she participated in other clubs and | ||||||
| 18 | organizations, including Steele Farms as secretary-treasurer, | ||||||
| 19 | Dover Congregational Church as a Sunday school teacher, the | ||||||
| 20 | board of the American Red Cross, the Dover Grade School Board, | ||||||
| 21 | the Bureau County United Way, and as a Camp Fire Girls Leader; | ||||||
| 22 | she hosted students and was on the board for the American Field | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | Service and the Bureau Valley Business and Professional Women's | ||||||
| 2 | Club, where she was woman of the year in 1980; and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, Margery Steele was preceded in death by her | ||||||
| 4 | parents; her 3 brothers; and her sister; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Margery Steele is survived by her husband of 67 | ||||||
| 6 | years, Harold; her children, Greg (Sandra) Steele, Linda (Noel) | ||||||
| 7 | Hobbs, Becky (Tom) Hall, and Susan (Mike) Teslow; her AFS-USA | ||||||
| 8 | foreign exchange daughters, Dr. Akke Van der Zijpp and Kyoko | ||||||
| 9 | (Shinobo) Tanaka; her grandchildren, Kristopher (Dawn) Hall, | ||||||
| 10 | Alanna (Evan Rapoport) Hobbs, Cpt. Chad (Dr. Michelle) Foreman, | ||||||
| 11 | Katie (Michael) Baldwin, and Rachel Foreman; her foreign | ||||||
| 12 | grandchildren, Karin and Jumi Yamada; her great-grandsons, | ||||||
| 13 | Jacob Foreman and Ieppi Tanaka; and several nieces and nephews; | ||||||
| 14 | therefore, be it

| 15 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 16 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 17 | Margery W. Steele, and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
| 18 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
| 19 | further
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 21 | presented to the family of Margery Steele as an expression of | ||||||
| 22 | our deepest sympathy.
