| 1 | | AN ACT concerning local government.
|
| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
| 4 | | Section 5. The Local Governmental Employees Political |
| 5 | | Rights Act is amended by changing Section 12 as follows: |
| 6 | | (50 ILCS 135/12) |
| 7 | | Sec. 12. Elective and appointed office. |
| 8 | | (a) A member of any fire department or fire protection |
| 9 | | district may: |
| 10 | | (1) be a candidate for elective public office and serve |
| 11 | | in that public office if elected; |
| 12 | | (2) be appointed to any public office and serve in that |
| 13 | | public office if appointed; and |
| 14 | | (3) as long as the member is not in uniform and not on |
| 15 | | duty, solicit votes and campaign funds and challenge voters |
| 16 | | for the public office for which the member is a candidate.

| 17 | | (b) A firefighter who is elected to the Illinois General |
| 18 | | Assembly shall, upon written application to the employer, be |
| 19 | | granted a leave of absence without compensation during his or |
| 20 | | her term of office. |
| 21 | | (c) A police officer or Sheriff's deputy may be a candidate
|
| 22 | | for or appointed to serve in, and if elected or appointed serve |
| 23 | | in, the Illinois General Assembly. A
