| 3 | | Speech Awareness Day, which seeks to raise state and
national |
| 4 | | awareness about Childhood Apraxia of Speech, a
particularly |
| 5 | | difficult, persistent, and severe neurological
speech disorder |
| 6 | | in youngsters; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) causes affected
|
| 8 | | children to have extreme difficulty planning and producing the |
| 9 | | precise, highly refined, and specific series of movements of |
| 10 | | the tongue, lips, jaw, and palate that are necessary in |
| 11 | | producing clear, intelligible speech; it is among the most |
| 12 | | severe of
speech and communication problems in children; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, While the act of learning to speak comes |
| 14 | | effortlessly to most children, those with apraxia require years |
| 15 | | of intensive speech therapy and have lengthy struggles to |
| 16 | | communicate; although not life-threatening, the disorder is |
| 17 | | life-altering, as families are left to cope with the emotional, |
| 18 | | physical, and financial challenges of having a child diagnosed |
| 19 | | with CAS; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Every child should be afforded their best |
| 21 | | opportunity
to develop speech and every child deserves a voice; |
| 22 | | with early
intervention and appropriate therapy, most children |
