| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of
Lawrence "Coach" Hanzel of Beach Park, | ||||||
| 4 | who passed away on May 14, 2012; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Lawrence Hanzel was born on January 16, 1927, in | ||||||
| 6 | North Chicago; he remained a lifelong resident of the North | ||||||
| 7 | Chicago area; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Lawrence Hanzel served his country with pride as a | ||||||
| 9 | member of the United States Army as a paratrooper; after the | ||||||
| 10 | end of the war, he attended the University of Wisconsin, where | ||||||
| 11 | he graduated in 1952; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Lawrence Hanzel began his teaching career at North | ||||||
| 13 | Chicago Community High School as a teacher and football, | ||||||
| 14 | basketball, and golf coach when the school opened in 1953; in | ||||||
| 15 | 1963, he became the school's head basketball coach; in 1972, he | ||||||
| 16 | was selected to serve as the school's Athletic Director, a | ||||||
| 17 | position he held until his retirement; his winning records and | ||||||
| 18 | his devotion to his athletes made him fondly known as "Poppa | ||||||
| 19 | Hawk"; he also served as the school's assistant football coach | ||||||
| 20 | for 13 years; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, Lawrence Hanzel was preceded in death by his son, | ||||||

| 1 | Christopher Hanzel; his sister, Elaine DeGrazia; and his | ||||||
| 2 | parents, Helen and Leo Hanzel; and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, Lawrence Hanzel is survived by his wife, Marilyn | ||||||
| 4 | (nee Crawford) Hanzel; his children, Laurie (Hanzel) (Don) | ||||||
| 5 | Lindskog and her children, Derek Lindskog and Sarah (Lindskog) | ||||||
| 6 | (Nate) Swartzendruber; Richard (Debbie) Hanzel and his | ||||||
| 7 | children, Eric Hanzel, Justin Hanzel, Adam Hanzel, and Lauren | ||||||
| 8 | Hanzel; Steven Hanzel and his children, Amanda and Bradly | ||||||
| 9 | Hanzel; and MaryJo (Hanzel) (John) Fortin and children, Joseph | ||||||
| 10 | Diesi, Hannah Diesi, and Jillian Fortin; his brother, Richard | ||||||
| 11 | Hanzel; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Frank and Carol Hough | ||||||
| 12 | and Glen and Joan Johnson; his many nieces and nephews; and his | ||||||
| 13 | unborn great-grandchild; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 14 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 15 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
| 16 | his family and friends, the passing of Lawrence "Coach" Hanzel; | ||||||
| 17 | and be it further
| ||||||
| 18 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 19 | presented to the family of Lawrence Hanzel as an expression of | ||||||
| 20 | our sympathy.
