| 2 | WHEREAS, National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week | ||||||
| 3 | (NMLPW) is celebrated annually to recognize the vital role in | ||||||
| 4 | health care of more than 300,000 medical laboratory | ||||||
| 5 | professionals and 15,000 board-certified pathologists; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, NMLPW has been observed since 1975; the week | ||||||
| 7 | honors the dedication and commitment of laboratory | ||||||
| 8 | professionals to quality patient care; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, The American Society of Clinical Pathologists | ||||||
| 10 | (ASCP), in order to maintain both academic and clinical | ||||||
| 11 | competency in the field, has certified more than 450,000 | ||||||
| 12 | individuals since its inception; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, The ASCP Board of Certification (formerly the ASCP | ||||||
| 14 | Board of Registry) was founded in 1928 and is recognized as the | ||||||
| 15 | leader in certifying medical laboratory professionals by | ||||||
| 16 | offering more than 20 different examinations for technicians, | ||||||
| 17 | technologists, specialists, and diplomates in laboratory | ||||||
| 18 | management; and
| ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Laboratory professionals, including pathologists, | ||||||
| 20 | medical technologists, cytotechnologists, histotechnologists, | ||||||
| 21 | medical technicians, phlebotomists and histological | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | technicians, and cytogeneticists and cytopathologists, are | ||||||
| 2 | well-educated and highly trained specialists who perform, | ||||||
| 3 | evaluate, and report the results of laboratory tests in order | ||||||
| 4 | to detect and diagnose disease and to monitor treatment; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Laboratory test results comprise 70% of a | ||||||
| 6 | patient's medical record, and collaboration between | ||||||
| 7 | laboratories provides a comprehensive record of the patient; | ||||||
| 8 | and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, More than 10 billion laboratory tests are | ||||||
| 10 | performed annually in the United States; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Laboratory professionals at the University of | ||||||
| 12 | Chicago Department of Medicine and other quality institutions | ||||||
| 13 | work behind the scenes of patient care; their expertise and use | ||||||
| 14 | of state-of-the-art technology are critical components of the | ||||||
| 15 | health care team that diagnoses diseases, selects treatments, | ||||||
| 16 | and saves lives; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 17 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 18 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate the week | ||||||
| 19 | of April 22-28, 2012 as "Medical Laboratory Professionals Week" | ||||||
| 20 | in the State of Illinois; and be it further
| ||||||
| 21 | RESOLVED, That we encourage the people of Illinois to | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | observe Medical Laboratory Professionals Week by recognizing | ||||||
| 2 | the vital role of medical laboratory professionals to the | ||||||
| 3 | delivery of quality health care services; and be it further | ||||||
| 4 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 5 | presented to the University of Chicago Medical Laboratory | ||||||
| 6 | Professionals.
