| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Since the beginning of this great State, millions | ||||||
| 3 | of brave men and women of Illinois have courageously answered | ||||||
| 4 | the call to defend the ideals of freedom and democracy both at | ||||||
| 5 | home and abroad; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, On Veterans Day, November 11, we recognize the | ||||||
| 7 | sacrifice of all veterans, both those who have served in the | ||||||
| 8 | past and those serving in the present; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, We specifically wish to reflect on the heritage of | ||||||
| 10 | the service rendered by all components of the Illinois National | ||||||
| 11 | Guard and recognize the work and dedication of the Illinois | ||||||
| 12 | State Military Museum and the Illinois National Guard and | ||||||
| 13 | Militia Historical Society; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, The Illinois State Military Museum, housed in a | ||||||
| 15 | building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, | ||||||
| 16 | holds significant artifacts from the heritage of the Illinois | ||||||
| 17 | National Guard, such as the cork leg of Mexican General Antonio | ||||||
| 18 | Lopez de Santa Anna, which was captured by Illinois soldiers | ||||||
| 19 | during the battle of Cerro Gordo in the Mexican War; the wooden | ||||||
| 20 | target board that President Abraham Lincoln used to test-fire | ||||||
| 21 | the Spencer rifle in 1863 at the White House before he bought | ||||||
| 22 | the weapon for the Union Army; the largest collection of Civil | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | War battle flags; and the Medal of Honor awarded during World | ||||||
| 2 | War I to First Sergeant Johannes Anderson of the 33rd Infantry | ||||||
| 3 | Division; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, The museum further displays exhibits explaining | ||||||
| 5 | the expanded role of Illinois soldiers and airmen in support | ||||||
| 6 | the Global War on Terrorism, in global peacekeeping operations, | ||||||
| 7 | and in support to the citizens of Illinois in the aftermath of | ||||||
| 8 | floods and tornadoes; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, The Illinois State Military Museum could not | ||||||
| 10 | accomplish these tasks without the financial support of the | ||||||
| 11 | Illinois National Guard and Militia Historical Society; | ||||||
| 12 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 13 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 14 | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 15 | we recognize the work and dedication of the Illinois State | ||||||
| 16 | Military Museum and the Illinois National Guard and Militia | ||||||
| 17 | Historical Society to preserve, safeguard, and honor the | ||||||
| 18 | Illinois National Guard heritage and share it with current and | ||||||
| 19 | future generations; and be it further
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 21 | presented to the Illinois State Military Museum and the | ||||||
| 22 | Illinois National Guard and Militia Historical Society as a | ||||||

| 1 | symbol of our esteem and respect.
