| 2 | | WHEREAS, St. John's Hospital School of Nursing, the first |
| 3 | | Catholic school of nursing in the United States, was |
| 4 | | established on October 4, 1886 in Springfield for the members |
| 5 | | of the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Their mission was to care for the sick and the |
| 7 | | needy of the community in a spirit of joy, respect, and |
| 8 | | commitment to competence; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, From that day until the present, the values and |
| 10 | | vision of the Hospital Sisters have underscored and directed |
| 11 | | the efforts of the faculty and students; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, In 1912, the school accepted the first laywoman |
| 13 | | and voluntarily sought approval from the Illinois Department of |
| 14 | | Registration and Education; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, In 1952, when the National League for Nursing |
| 16 | | first began its accreditation program for schools of nursing, |
| 17 | | St. John's was among those who came forward to meet this new |
| 18 | | challenge; and
|
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Today, St. John's College students earn a Bachelor |
| 20 | | of Science Degree in Nursing; and
