| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Madeleine Fuqua of Waukegan, who passed |
| 4 | | away on July 31, 2010; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Madeleine Fuqua was born May 18, 1923 in Detroit, |
| 6 | | Michigan and was a lifelong Waukegan resident; she graduated |
| 7 | | from Waukegan Township High School and attended the |
| 8 | | Universities of Illinois and Wisconsin and ultimately received |
| 9 | | her degree from Lake Forest College; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, She was a Republican Precinct Committeeman for 16 |
| 11 | | years and also on the Lake County Regional Planning Commission |
| 12 | | for 10 years; she was President of the Waukegan YWCA from 1952 |
| 13 | | to 1954, a member of the chapter of Waukegan League of Women |
| 14 | | Voters, a member of the American Civil Liberties Union, a |
| 15 | | member of the Lake County Urban League Guild, a member of the |
| 16 | | Waukegan Housing Authority, Vice Chair of the Lake County First |
| 17 | | Governmental Study Commission, co-chair of the Lake County |
| 18 | | Committee for the Equal Rights Amendment, and was appointed by |
| 19 | | former Illinois Governor James Thompson to the Illinois Martin |
| 20 | | Luther King Commission; and
|
| 21 | | WHEREAS, She was a community activist; she was also a |
| 22 | | member of the Waukegan Garden Club, a volunteer at the Chicago |
|

| 1 | | Botanical Garden, a potter, a photographer, and an expert |
| 2 | | marksman; she loved playing bridge with her friends and |
| 3 | | traveling, especially to Africa; she was a founding member of |
| 4 | | the Waukegan Community Players and founding member of the |
| 5 | | Waukegan Green Town Gardens; she was a fundraiser for the |
| 6 | | Waukegan Symphony Orchestra; and |
| 7 | | WHEREAS, In 1949 she married her childhood sweetheart, |
| 8 | | Ellis Fuqua, raising 2 children; she tended home and hearth, |
| 9 | | and carpooled woodwind quintets and rifle teams to |
| 10 | | competitions; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Madeleine Fuqua was preceded in death by her |
| 12 | | parents, Albert Mackey and Madeleine Givens Mackey; her |
| 13 | | husband, Ellis E. Fuqua; her daughter, Nancy Fuqua Erkkila; her |
| 14 | | son-in-law, John Erkkilla; and her grandchildren, Thomas J. and |
| 15 | | Anne Claire; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Madeleine Fuqua is survived by her son, Terry |
| 17 | | Fuqua and daughter-in-law, Gudrun; her grandchildren, Kristin |
| 18 | | and Erik; her brothers, Bill and Tom Mackey; and her sister, |
| 19 | | Roberta Mackey Rigger; therefore, be it
|
| 20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL |
| 21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with |
| 22 | | her family and friends, the passing of Madeleine Fuqua; and be |
