| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Bishop Arthur M. Brazier of Chicago, who | ||||||
| 4 | passed away on October 22, 2010; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier served his country in the | ||||||
| 6 | U.S. Army in Burma and India during World War II; he was | ||||||
| 7 | employed as a U.S. Post Office letter carrier when he enrolled | ||||||
| 8 | in the Moody Bible Institute in 1955; he became pastor of the | ||||||
| 9 | Apostolic Church of God in 1960, a year before he graduated | ||||||
| 10 | from the Bible Institute; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier led the Apostolic Church of | ||||||
| 12 | God as pastor for 48 years until his retirement in 2008; during | ||||||
| 13 | his tenure, he built the church's membership to 20,000 people; | ||||||
| 14 | and | ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier was the founding president | ||||||
| 16 | of The Woodlawn Organization, a South Side community | ||||||
| 17 | organization active in the civil rights movement in its early | ||||||
| 18 | years; The Woodlawn Organization's Woodlawn Preservation and | ||||||
| 19 | Investment Company acquired vacant city properties, where it | ||||||
| 20 | built low and mixed-income housing; in 1966, he invited Martin | ||||||
| 21 | Luther King Jr. to Chicago, where the pair protested segregated | ||||||
| 22 | schools and housing; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier recently spearheaded an | ||||||
| 2 | effort to create the Woodlawn Children's Promise
Zone to ensure | ||||||
| 3 | that school-aged children in the Woodlawn community reap the | ||||||
| 4 | benefit of all community
resources that could be utilized to | ||||||
| 5 | enhance their educational experience, raise academic | ||||||
| 6 | standards, and create
a safe environment where they can thrive; | ||||||
| 7 | and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier has served as a | ||||||
| 9 | well-respected community and spiritual adviser to numerous
| ||||||
| 10 | civic and business leaders for many decades in the City of | ||||||
| 11 | Chicago and beyond; and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier is survived by his wife, | ||||||
| 13 | Esther Isabelle; his son, the Reverend Bryon Brazier; his 3 | ||||||
| 14 | daughters, Lola Hillman, Janice Dortch, and Rosalyn Shepherd; | ||||||
| 15 | his 7 grandchildren; and his 11 great-grandchildren; | ||||||
| 16 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 17 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 18 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | ||||||
| 19 | his family and friends, the passing of Bishop Arthur Brazier; | ||||||
| 20 | and be it further
| ||||||
| 21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||

| 1 | presented to the family of Bishop Arthur Brazier as a symbol of | ||||||
| 2 | our sympathy.
