HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Christel N. Clemmons-Butler, who passed away on July 31, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Christel Clemmons-Butler was born on January 16, 1939, in Chicago; her parents were Christopher and Flora Mae (Hayes) Cross; and

WHEREAS, Christel Clemmons-Butler was christened at Church of the Good Shepherd; she attended Colman Elementary School, Du Sable High School, Loyola University's Water Tower Campus, and Midwestern Broadcasting School; and

WHEREAS, After working at Michael Reese Hospital and Delta Airlines, Christel Clemmons-Butler spent 34 proud years at United Airlines before her retirement in 2001; she also worked as an employment and consumer affairs representative, appeared in United Airlines industrial videos, and was a co-recipient of a Human Resources Division MVP award for establishing the first Welfare-to-Work Program in the country; she served as a consultant to the Small Business Administration for that program; and

WHEREAS, Christel Clemmons-Butler spent 31 years as an Illinois State Real Estate Sales and Referral Counselor and held an FCC Radio Broadcasting and Operator License in Illinois; she was also affiliated with the National Association of Realtors, the Board of Directors of Hope Community Service in Markham, and Jus' Friends; while living in Las Vegas, Chris served on the Boards of Directors of, and served as an officer for, AARP NW Chapter #4395 and the Clark County Urban League Guild; she was also a member of the Chicago Connection, Las Vegas Drifters, Inc., Las Vegas Jazz Society, NAACP, and Pokeno "9"; and

WHEREAS, Christel Clemmons-Butler loved to travel; she volunteered her time to a plethora of organizations and still found time to show off her beautiful smile and inimitable style through her modeling in fashion shows; and

WHEREAS, Christel Clemmons-Butler was preceded in death by her children, Gregory and Geoffrey; Kenneth Butler; her first husband, Vincent B. Clemmons; and her second husband, Frank L. Butler; and

WHEREAS, Christel Clemmons-Butler is survived by her children, Brent H. Clemmons (Cathy), Frank Butler, Ronald (Peggy), Rochelle Butler-Nelson (James), Paul (Diane), Milton Craig, Keith (Phyllis), Kathleen Butler-Walker (Gil), Kevin (Anita), and Regina Butler-Smith (Phil); her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her many cousins and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Christel N. Clemmons-Butler; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Christel Clemmons-Butler as an expression of our sympathy.
