HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2
    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives wish to congratulate the administration, 
4
staff, and students of Roosevelt University on the occasion of 
5
the university's 65th anniversary and the ground-breaking for a 
6
dramatic 32-story building at the university on April 17, 2010; 
7
and
  
 
8
    WHEREAS, Roosevelt University has graduated more than 
9
70,000 students who have become leaders in their professions 
10
and careers, including Chicago's first African-American mayor, 
11
Harold Washington; and
  
 
12
    WHEREAS, Roosevelt University was founded at a time when 
13
most American universities and colleges did not enroll large 
14
numbers of minority, immigrant, or Jewish students; and
 
15
    WHEREAS, Roosevelt University became one of the nation's 
16
first colleges to admit all qualified students, regardless of 
17
race, religion, or national origin; and
  
 
18
    WHEREAS, Throughout its history, Roosevelt University has 
19
always remained true to the values of inclusiveness, 
20
opportunity, and social justice; today, Roosevelt remains one 
21
of the most diverse private universities in the Midwest; and

    WHEREAS, Under the leadership of President Chuck 
2
Middleton, Roosevelt University has undertaken a major new 
3
venture in the construction of the nation's second-tallest 
4
university building; when the new vertical campus opens in 
5
January of 2012, Roosevelt will have modern classrooms, 
6
laboratories, offices, student life facilities, and housing 
7
for 600 students; and
  
 
8
    WHEREAS, This extraordinary building will both transform 
9
Roosevelt University and create construction jobs for hundreds 
10
of Chicagoans at a time when there are very few new building 
11
projects in the city; therefore, be it
  
 
12
    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
13
NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
14
congratulate the administration, staff, and students of 
15
Roosevelt University on the occasion of the university's 65th 
16
anniversary and its new building and wish President Middleton 
17
and the entire Roosevelt community many years of continued 
18
success in the future; and be it further
  
 
19
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
20
presented to Roosevelt University President Chuck Middleton 
21
and the Roosevelt University Board of Trustees.
