| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Mary Lou Chapa on | ||||||
| 4 | the occasion of being named the grand marshal for Aurora's | ||||||
| 5 | Fourth of July parade; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Mary Lou Chapa was born in Texas; she and her | ||||||
| 7 | husband, Benito, came to Aurora and started their family; | ||||||
| 8 | together, they had four children; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Mary Lou Chapa overcame racial prejudice and | ||||||
| 10 | sexism to flourish in the real estate business; when Mrs. Chapa | ||||||
| 11 | received her real estate license in 1967, there were no | ||||||
| 12 | minority and few women realtors, leading most of her peers to | ||||||
| 13 | believe that she was foolish to pursue such an endeavor; | ||||||
| 14 | disregarding such predictions, she went on to gain her broker's | ||||||
| 15 | license in 1970 and opened her own office, becoming the first | ||||||
| 16 | Latino realtor in Aurora; today, Chapa Realty is nearly 40 | ||||||
| 17 | years old and a resounding success; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Mary Lou Chapa has served her community as a | ||||||
| 19 | member of numerous boards and organizations, including the | ||||||
| 20 | board of directors for Mutual Ground, the Visiting Nurse | ||||||
| 21 | Association, the Salvation Army, Family Counseling Services, | ||||||
| 22 | Harris Bank, and the Hispanic and Greater Aurora Chambers of | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | Commerce; she is a member of the Aurora Tri-County Association | ||||||
| 2 | of Realtors, the State Board of Realtors, and the National | ||||||
| 3 | Board of Realtors; she is also a past member of the YWCA Board | ||||||
| 4 | and the Aurora Economic Development Commission; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Mary Lou Chapa has been an active participant in | ||||||
| 6 | numerous charitable causes; she has helped to raise money for | ||||||
| 7 | the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Cancer Foundation, and | ||||||
| 8 | Mutual Ground; and | ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, In 2005, Mary Lou Chapa was named one of the | ||||||
| 10 | Aurora YWCA's "Woman of Distinction" in honor of her service to | ||||||
| 11 | her community; she is also one of Waubonsee Community College's | ||||||
| 12 | "Fabulous 40" alumni; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Mary Lou Chapa serves as a model of hard work, | ||||||
| 14 | integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of | ||||||
| 15 | Illinois; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 17 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 18 | congratulate Mary Lou Chapa on the occasion of being named the | ||||||
| 19 | grand marshal for Aurora's Fourth of July parade and wish her | ||||||
| 20 | continued success in her future endeavors; and be it further
| ||||||
| 21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
