| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |

| Representatives are pleased to congratulate Virginia Umberger |
| 4 |
| of Elgin on the occasion of her 100th birthday; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Virginia has dedicated a large part of her life to |
| 6 |
| gardening and promoting the preservation of native plants and |
| 7 |
| trees; she and her husband were leaders of the Gourd Society, |
| 8 |
| learning about the ancient art of growing and using gourds as |
| 9 |
| art, tools, and other ideas; and
|
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, She and her husband traveled the world using their |
| 11 |
| knowledge on gourds; a museum in New Zealand displays writing |
| 12 |
| between Virginia and a famous New Zealand botanist; and
|
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, She has been a member of the Elgin Garden Club |
| 14 |
| since 1950; she is a founding member of The Wild Ones and many |
| 15 |
| other clubs that are dedicated to environmental issues; and
|
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, Virginia has been featured in many magazine |
| 17 |
| articles and is featured in the recent book, Grace from the |
| 18 |
| Garden, with an entire chapter that describes her philosophy of |
| 19 |
| life and how it is reflected in her work and gardening; and
|
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, Virginia will celebrate the centennial of her |
