| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of the | ||||||
| 4 | Village of Niles on the occasion of the Niles Public Library | ||||||
| 5 | District's 50th anniversary; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, The history of the Niles Public Library began on | ||||||
| 7 | April 18, 1959, when a referendum was passed to establish the | ||||||
| 8 | Niles Public Library District; the new library was open 13 | ||||||
| 9 | hours a week and had 3,600 books and 750 family cards; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Due to population growth and the need to provide | ||||||
| 11 | quality public library service, the Niles Public Library | ||||||
| 12 | completed an expansion project that resulted in adding | ||||||
| 13 | approximately 30,000 square feet to the existing building in | ||||||
| 14 | October of 1998; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, The Niles Public Library District seeks to enrich | ||||||
| 16 | the community by meeting its informational, educational, | ||||||
| 17 | cultural and recreational needs by providing a wide variety of | ||||||
| 18 | materials, resources, and services, as well as a friendly, | ||||||
| 19 | experienced, and professional staff in a safe and welcoming | ||||||
| 20 | environment; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, Today, the Niles Public Library District serves | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | over 58,000 residents in Niles and parts of unincorporated Des | ||||||
| 2 | Plaines and Glenview; with a collection of more than 275,000 | ||||||
| 3 | items, the library's annual circulation exceeds 1.2 million | ||||||
| 4 | loans; in addition, the library's membership in the North | ||||||
| 5 | Suburban Library System and ILLINET (the Illinois Network of | ||||||
| 6 | Libraries) provides patrons with additional access to millions | ||||||
| 7 | of items owned by other libraries; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, The Niles Public Library District has served as a | ||||||
| 9 | beacon of knowledge to the residents of Niles and its | ||||||
| 10 | surrounding communities, a service that is invaluable to the | ||||||
| 11 | growth and prosperity of the citizens of this State; therefore, | ||||||
| 12 | be it
| ||||||
| 13 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 14 | NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 15 | congratulate the citizens of the Village of Niles on the | ||||||
| 16 | occasion of the Niles Public Library District's 50th | ||||||
| 17 | anniversary; and be it further

| 18 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 19 | presented to Dennis O'Donovan, President of the Niles Library | ||||||
| 20 | Board, as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
