HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The First Presbyterian Church of Tolono 
3
celebrated its 150th anniversary on June 28, 2008; and

 
4
    WHEREAS, The Presbyterian Society was formed with 10 
5
members in 1857, meeting in a grain warehouse on East Main 
6
Street in Tolono; and

 
7
    WHEREAS, Services later moved to the bar room of the Marion 
8
House, where the whiskey was covered up during the services; 
9
and

 
10
    WHEREAS, In the spring of 1858 the congregation built a 
11
$3,000 wood structure; the current stone church was built in 
12
1893 for $5,000; and

 
13
    WHEREAS, The church has an interesting history; at the 
14
beginning of the church and its history, the congregation found 
15
itself split over the slavery issue; and in April of 1915, 
16
during a struggle to keep liquor out of the village, the 
17
minister's house was bombed with dynamite; and

 
18
    WHEREAS, The church has had many pastors, including two 
19
women; today the church membership stands around 85 members; 
20
therefore, be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
2
NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
3
congratulate the pastor, staff, and congregation of the First 
4
Presbyterian Church of Tolono on the sesquicentennial 
5
anniversary of the church; and be it further

 
6
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
7
presented to the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of 
8
Tolono as a symbol of our respect.
