| AN ACT concerning vehicles.

| Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|

| represented in the General Assembly:
|

| Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding |
| 5 |
| Section 11-503.5 as follows:
|

| (625 ILCS 5/11-503.5 new)
|
| 7 |
| Sec. 11-503.5. Distracted driving. |
| 8 |
| (a) A person commits distracted driving when he or she |
| 9 |
| fails to operate a motor vehicle according to the law or |
| 10 |
| ordinance governing the movement of vehicles while (i) engaging |
| 11 |
| in text messaging, or (ii) reading a newspaper, book, or |
| 12 |
| magazine. |
| 13 |
| (b) Any person found in violation of subsection (a) of this |
| 14 |
| Section commits a petty offense.
