SENATE RESOLUTION


 
2
    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to  
3
learn of the death of
Daisy Fair-Cox, who passed away on 
4
October 16, 2008; and

 
5
    WHEREAS, Daisy Fair-Cox was born on March 23, 1902, in 
6
Metropolis, Indiana; she was the daughter of George and Laura 
7
(Tinsley) Long; she was married to Damon Fair for 32 years; he 
8
preceded her in death in 1978; she married Norval M. Cox Jr. in 
9
1985; and

 
10
    WHEREAS, Daisy Fair-Cox graduated from Southern Illinois 
11
University at Carbondale and the University of Illinois, where 
12
she received her bachelor's of science and master's degree in 
13
education; and

 
14
    WHEREAS, In 1926, Daisy Fair-Cox went to Alton and was 
15
hired by the Alton school district to teach at Dunbar 
16
Elementary School, later becoming the school's principal; and

 
17
    WHEREAS, Daisy Fair-Cox also worked as an organist at Berea 
18
Lutheran Church, a mission church of Trinity Lutheran Church in 
19
Alton; she was a member of Trinity Lutheran, where she served 
20
on the Christian Board of Education, the Stewardship Board, and 
21
sang in the choir; and

    WHEREAS, Daisy Fair-Cox served as an educator in the Alton 
2
public school system for 39 years, serving as principal of the 
3
Dunbar Elementary School for 20 of the 39 years; she was also 
4
recognized for her effort to help establish the first 
5
kindergarten for black youth in Alton; in 1942, she was 
6
assigned as an assistant principal at the Horace Mann-Dunbar 
7
School; and

 
8
    WHEREAS, Daisy Fair-Cox's first love was always to have 
9
worked with underprivileged children; in whatever organization 
10
she joined, she became involved with scholarships if possible; 
11
and
 
12
    WHEREAS, Daisy Fair-Cox was well known in her community for 
13
her great body of community service, including work with the 
14
Citizens Advisory Committee of the Alton Community Unit School 
15
District 11, Board of Directors (GHDRC), the Self Development 
16
of People's Committee Board, which sponsored the national 
17
program "One Hour of Sharing", the Y.W.C.A. Board, where she 
18
served as president, the Top Ladies of Distinction, St. Louis 
19
Chapter, the Federated Unity Club of Alton, the Illinois 
20
Association of Colored Women's Club, where she served as State 
21
president, and the National Association of Colored Women's 
22
Club, where she served as national parliamentarian; and

    WHEREAS, Daisy Fair-Cox is survived by her husband; her 
2
stepchildren, Norval M. Cox III, Rasheedah Madyun, Darlene A. 
3
Hall, Kathleen M. Cox, and Lisa V. Cox-Johnson and her husband, 
4
Keith; her nieces, Dorothy Mathis, Charlotte Johnson, and 
5
Phyllis Foy; and many other nieces and cousins throughout the 
6
country; therefore, be it

 
7
    RESOLVED, BY THE  SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL 
8
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 
9
her family and friends, the passing of Daisy Fair-Cox; and be 
10
it further

 
11
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
12
presented to the family of Daisy Fair-Cox as an expression of 
13
our sympathy.
