| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 |
| learn of the death of Calvin Ashford Jr. of Chicago, who passed |
| 4 |
| away on June 24, 2008; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, He was the Principal and Design Director of |
| 6 |
| Gilmore-Ashford-Powers, a notable interior design firm; his |
| 7 |
| many clients included Maya Angelou, Sammy Sosa, Jalen Rose, and |
| 8 |
| Juwan Howard; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, He was born in Fairfield, South Carolina in 1935 |
| 10 |
| and raised in Michigan; he received a degree in design from |
| 11 |
| Columbia University in New York; he also received a Master's |
| 12 |
| degree in microbiology from the University of Michigan and his |
| 13 |
| doctorate in microbiology from the University of Illinois at |
| 14 |
| Chicago; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, He worked in private residences in New York, |
| 16 |
| Chicago, Palm Springs, and around the globe, in such places as |
| 17 |
| Canada and Great Britain; his work has been showcased in |
| 18 |
| Architectural Digest, London Designs and Interiors, House and |
| 19 |
| Garden, and Better Homes & Gardens; and
|
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, Calvin Ashford Jr. is survived by his mother, |
| 21 |
| Alice Ashford; his brothers, Nickolas (Valerie Simpson) |
