SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Mary K. McCloskey of Alton, who passed away on January 13, 2008; and

WHEREAS, She was born February 11, 1909, in Marion, Indiana, and raised in New Castle, Indiana, by her parents Felix and Nola (Brown) Peckinpaugh; she attended Iowa State University, where she joined Pi Beta Phi sorority and graduated with a master's degree in education; following graduation, she taught home economics in South Bend, Indiana; and

WHEREAS, She married Dr. James D. McCloskey; after he completed medical residency at the University of Iowa, they moved to Alton where Dr. McCloskey was a noted ENT surgeon and she became an enthusiastic community volunteer; she was active in St. Joseph Hospital and Madison County Medical Society auxiliaries, League of Women Voters, American Association of University Women, and Zonta International; and

WHEREAS, She taught emergency mass feeding classes for the American Red Cross, volunteered at her children's schools, and led Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops; after the passing of her husband in 1963, she returned to the work force as a social worker for the State of Illinois; she rose to supervisory positions prior to retirement; after retirement she returned to community service, but devoted much of her time and energy to enjoying and helping family and friends; and

WHEREAS, Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Provost and Margaret Hammons; a son, James McCloskey; along with eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Mary K. McCloskey; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mary K. McCloskey as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
