SENATE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, Peabody Energy, the world's largest coal company, 
3
strives to provide energy security, economic growth, and 
4
environmental solutions for citizens of the State of Illinois 
5
and the world; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, Peabody has been a worldwide leader in safety; and

 
7
    WHEREAS, Peabody is the most recognized company among its 
8
peers for sustainability and corporate responsibility; and

 
9
    WHEREAS, Peabody is a global leader in advancing new, 
10
environmentally responsible uses for clean coal; and

 
11
    WHEREAS, Peabody creates thousands of skilled jobs and 
12
billions of dollars in annual economic benefits in communities 
13
it serves through good environmental stewardship, community 
14
involvement, and corporate contributions; and

 
15
    WHEREAS, Francis Peabody founded Peabody Energy in 
16
Chicago, opened the company's first mines in Williamson County, 
17
and partnered with Commonwealth Edison founder Samuel Insull to 
18
create the Illinois electricity grid and bring power to 
19
millions of Midwesterners; and

    WHEREAS, Francis Peabody's Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak 
2
Brook attracts thousands of visitors to the State and is listed 
3
on the National Register of Historic Places; and
 
4
    WHEREAS, Peabody is helping drive the next generation of 
5
clean coal projects such as the Prairie State Energy Campus in 
6
Southern Illinois; and


 
7
    WHEREAS, Peabody is a recognized leader of the S&P 500 and 
8
has been repeatedly named among Fortune Magazine's "Most 
9
Admired Companies"; therefore, be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL 
11
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate the date 
12
of May 29, 2008 as Peabody Energy 125th Anniversary Celebration 
13
Day in the State of Illinois; and be it further

 
14
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
15
presented to the Peabody Energy Corporation as a symbol of our 
16
esteem and respect.
