SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Richard E. Coy of Glen Carbon, who passed away on March 13, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Richard Coy was born October 28, 1925, in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, to Cristy and Elizabeth Hill-Coy; he married Grace McKallip on September 7, 1957, and they celebrated 49 years of marriage; and

WHEREAS, Richard Coy started his armed forces career on the USS Currituck AV-7 for the United States Navy serving from 1943 until 1945 as a hospital corpsman; he returned to the Navy in 1950 after completing his education in dentistry and served as a dental officer at the United States Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan, until 1953; he earned his bachelor of science degree, D.D. S. degree, and masters degree at the University of Pittsburgh Dental School; and

WHEREAS, As a dentist, Dr. Coy maintained a private practice in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, and taught at the University of Pittsburgh Dental School until 1970, where he was an associate professor; he moved to Edwardsville, where he was instrumental in developing the dental program at the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine; in 1985 he retired as the assistant dean of the dental school and professor emeritus; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Coy was professor and head of removal prosthodontics at Washington University School of Dentistry in St. Louis from 1985 until 1988; he maintained his private practice in Belleville until 2001; he lectured nationally and internationally for post-graduate and continuing education programs; he published dozens of articles in dental journals and was editor for many textbooks; he was a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, where he was vice chairman of the Council of Dental Materials; the American College of Prosthodontics; the American Equilibration Society, where he was president from 1985 until 1986; and the American Cleft Palate Association; he was also a Missouri Dental Specialty Board examiner; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Coy's fraternal memberships included Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Illinois, American Legion Post 199 of Edwardsville, and the academic fraternity Omicron Kappa Upsilon; Dr. Coy was an avid fan of music, especially jazz; he donated his collection of more than 68,000 albums and 2,500 compact discs to the Bloomington Symphony in Indianapolis; and

WHEREAS, In addition to his wife, Dr. Coy is survived by his daughter, Beth Coy-Abbott, and her husband, Bryan, and their children, Katheryn and James; his son, Richard C. Coy, and his wife, Terry, and their children, Sara, Brandon and Taylor; he was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Clark; and his sister, Ruth Wilson; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Dr. Richard Coy; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Richard Coy as a symbol of our sympathy.
