| AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 996 by replacing |

| everything after the enacting clause with the following:

| "Section 5. The Circuit Courts Act is amended by adding |

| Section 2.5 as follows:

| (705 ILCS 35/2.5 new) |
| 7 |
| Sec. 2.5. Retention elections. Retention elections for |
| 8 |
| circuit judges shall be conducted at general elections, as |
| 9 |
| provided for herein under Article VI, Section 12 of the |
| 10 |
| Constitution: |
| 11 |
| (a) Circuit judges elected from a subcircuit in a circuit |
| 12 |
| shall run for retention from that subcircuit in the circuit; |
| 13 |
| (b) Circuit judges elected from a county in a circuit shall |
| 14 |
| run for retention from that county in the circuit; and |
| 15 |
| (c) Circuit judges elected at large shall run for retention |
| 16 |
| at large in the circuit.
