| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives are pleased to honor our esteemed colleague, |
| 4 |
| State Representative Elga Jefferies, on her service to the |
| 5 |
| people of the State of Illinois; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Representative Jefferies is a lifelong resident |
| 7 |
| of Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood and has proudly served |
| 8 |
| her 26th Representative District constituents since 2006; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, In 2002, Representative Jefferies was recognized |
| 10 |
| for her knowledge of State government and commitment to her |
| 11 |
| community by being appointed to fill the remainder of State |
| 12 |
| Senator Margaret Smith's term; and
|
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, Representative Jefferies served for 19 years as a |
| 14 |
| legislative aide and office manager for the late Representative |
| 15 |
| Lovana "Lou" Jones; and
|
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, Following the death of Representative Jones in |
| 17 |
| 2006, Elga was appointed to serve the remainder of |
| 18 |
| Representative Jones' term; and |
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, Since 2000, Representative Jefferies has served |
| 20 |
| as the Deputy Mayor of Bronzeville, an elected position |
|

| established by the Bronzeville Merchants Association; she is |
| 2 |
| also active in Operation PUSH, the Task Force for Black |
| 3 |
| Empowerment, and the Palmer House for Boys; and |
| 4 |
| WHEREAS, As State Representative, she continued Lou Jones' |
| 5 |
| tradition of being a voice for the voiceless by fighting for |
| 6 |
| working families, children, and seniors, as well as helping |
| 7 |
| district residents to access State services; and
|
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, While serving as State Representative, she |
| 9 |
| compiled a number of important legislative accomplishments |
| 10 |
| that reflect her dedication to improving the lives of the 26th |
| 11 |
| District's residents, including voting for record increases in |
| 12 |
| education funding for local schools, pushing to expand |
| 13 |
| prescription drug coverage for seniors under the Illinois Cares |
| 14 |
| Rx program, fighting to increase funding for the Temporary |
| 15 |
| Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, successfully |
| 16 |
| taking on the big utility companies to provide rate relief for |
| 17 |
| consumers, and working to create programs to help rehabilitate |
| 18 |
| drug users and help them find the right path; and
|
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, Representative Jefferies is the dedicated mother |
| 20 |
| of four and the loving grandmother of four; her commitment to |
| 21 |
| public service is motivated by her desire that they and future |
| 22 |
| generations might grow up in a better world where opportunities |
| 23 |
| for success are widely available to all; therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |

| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
| 3 |
| thank Representative Elga Jefferies for her many years of |
| 4 |
| service to improving the safety, welfare, and quality of life |
| 5 |
| for the people of the 26th District and the people of Illinois |
| 6 |
| and wish her the best in all of her future endeavors; and be it |
| 7 |
| further
|

| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 9 |
| presented to Representative Elga Jefferies as a symbol of |
| 10 |
| appreciation and respect on behalf of her colleagues in the |
| 11 |
| Illinois House of Representatives.
