| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of our dear | ||||||
| 4 | former colleague and friend, former Illinois State | ||||||
| 5 | Representative Maureen Murphy from Evergreen Park, who passed | ||||||
| 6 | away August 9, 2008; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, She grew up in Evergreen Park and lived on the | ||||||
| 8 | same block she grew up on; she was married to her loving | ||||||
| 9 | husband Jack for 39 years; she was the proud mother of four | ||||||
| 10 | boys, Jason, Shaun, Michael, and Matthew; the loving | ||||||
| 11 | mother-in-law of Kelly; the doting grandmother of | ||||||
| 12 | grandchildren, Brennah, Mary Margaret (Maggie), John Payton, | ||||||
| 13 | and Nathan James Murphy; the caring sister of Jolene Churak and | ||||||
| 14 | Michael Tolan; and the beloved aunt of Maribeth Churak and Joey | ||||||
| 15 | Churak; and | ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, She had a lifelong devotion to the Catholic | ||||||
| 17 | Church; she attended Queen of Martyrs grammar school and Mother | ||||||
| 18 | of Sorrows High School in Blue Island, and she attended Mass at | ||||||
| 19 | her home parish of Queen of Martyrs daily; and | ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, She started her career in public service with her | ||||||
| 21 | election to the Evergreen Park High School Board in 1982, a | ||||||
| 22 | position she held for 10 years; she was elected to a 4-year | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | term as Worth Township Clerk in 1985; and | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Maureen Murphy was elected State Representative | ||||||
| 3 | for the 36th District in 1992, where she became spokesperson | ||||||
| 4 | and chairman of the House Revenue Committee; she championed the | ||||||
| 5 | rights of taxpayers by sponsoring the Cook County Property Tax | ||||||
| 6 | Cap Law and Cook County Property Assessment Reform; she fought | ||||||
| 7 | for Property Tax Appeal Board jurisdiction for all Cook County | ||||||
| 8 | taxpayers, and took an active role in spearheading
Chicago | ||||||
| 9 | school reform, one of her proudest achievements as a | ||||||
| 10 | legislator; and | ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Maureen Murphy continued her commitment to fiscal | ||||||
| 12 | responsibility and taxpayer rights by serving two consecutive | ||||||
| 13 | 4-year terms as First District Commissioner of the Cook County | ||||||
| 14 | Board of Review, helping ensure fair property assessments for | ||||||
| 15 | homeowners and business owners; and | ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, Maureen Murphy had been a faithful advocate for | ||||||
| 17 | the Republican Party and its candidates, serving as Worth | ||||||
| 18 | Township Committeeman since 1994, Cook County Republican Party | ||||||
| 19 | Chairman, State Central Committeeman from the 1st | ||||||
| 20 | Congressional District, Delegate to three G.O.P. national | ||||||
| 21 | conventions, Co-Chairman of the 1994 Republican State | ||||||
| 22 | Convention, and President of the Evergreen Park Republican | ||||||
| 23 | Organization; and | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | WHEREAS, Maureen Murphy was a successful businesswoman | ||||||
| 2 | with her Irish import store, Shannon Imports, and a realtor; | ||||||
| 3 | and | ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Maureen Murphy enjoyed the island of Maui, Hawaii, | ||||||
| 5 | where she enjoyed the sunrise on Mt. Haleakala and the soft | ||||||
| 6 | breezes off the Pacific Ocean; and | ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Maureen Murphy was preceded in death by her son, | ||||||
| 8 | Patrick; and her aunt, Helen Hoeffken; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 9 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 10 | NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 11 | send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of | ||||||
| 12 | Maureen Murphy; and be it further
| ||||||
| 13 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 14 | presented to the family of Maureen Murphy as a symbol of our | ||||||
| 15 | sincere sympathy at this time.
