HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Shanmugan 
4
Lakshmanan on the occasion of being named a 2007 Illinois Rural 
5
Physician of Excellence; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, Dr. Shanmugan Lakshmanan is from a rural town in 
7
southern India; he graduated from Madurai Medical School in 
8
Madurai, India in 1972; in 1973, he moved to Chicago, where he 
9
continued his internship, residency, and fellowship in general 
10
and colon/rectal surgery at Cook County Hospital in Chicago; 
11
after completing his training in December 1979, he was granted 
12
medical staff privileges at Salem Township Hospital in Salem, 
13
where he currently practices as a board certified general and 
14
colon/rectal surgeon, medical representative, and chief of 
15
staff; and

 
16
    WHEREAS, Dr. Shanmugan Lakshmanan is active in many medical 
17
organizations; he is a Fellow of the American Society of 
18
Colon/Rectal Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of 
19
Surgeons, and a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons of Canada; 
20
he is a member of the American Medical Association and the 
21
Illinois State Medical Society; he is a member and past 
22
president of the Marion County Medical Society; he is a past 
23
president of the Marion County Cancer Society; and he was a

member of the Marion County Health Board from 1995 to 1999; and

    WHEREAS, Dr. Shanmugan Lakshmanan is the devoted husband of 
3
Alamelu, the proud father of Soundhra and Lakshmi, and the 
4
loving grandfather of Ramya; and

 
5
    WHEREAS, Dr. Shanmugan Lakshmanan's dedication to the 
6
health and well-being of the citizens of this State makes him a 
7
model for the people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it

 
8
    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
9
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
10
congratulate Dr. Shanmugan Lakshmanan on the occasion of being 
11
named a 2007 Illinois Rural Physician of Excellence and wish 
12
him continued success and happiness in the future; and be it 
13
further

    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
15
presented to Dr. Shanmugan Lakshmanan as a symbol of our esteem 
16
and respect.
