HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Shelter Alliance is a national organization that offers domestic violence shelters and social service organizations cash for collecting old cell phones, creating an easy and essential fundraising tool for domestic violence programs; and

WHEREAS, Organizations involved in domestic violence prevention and safety programs collect used cell phones and deliver them to Shelter Alliance, which pays between $0.50 and $30 per cell phone; and

WHEREAS, Shelter Alliance has contributed over $2,500,000 to social service organizations nationwide; and

WHEREAS, There are nearly 300,000,000 cell phone users in the United States and it is predicted that wireless users switch phones every 18 months on average; and

WHEREAS, The State of Illinois has announced its intention to recycle electronic waste, including cell phones discarded by the government; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the State to recycle cell phones through a program that will benefit and raise funds for domestic violence prevention and victims; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Governor Blagojevich and the Director of Central Management Services.
