HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to recognize Tilton Police 
4
Lieutenant David Cornett for saving the life of Amanda Burton 
5
during a house fire on February 8, 2007; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, Lieutenant Cornett has been an officer since 1996; 
7
and

 
8
    WHEREAS, Tilton officials received the call of a fire 
9
before 1 a.m. on February 8; reports indicated that a teenager 
10
was trapped in her bedroom in the basement; and

 
11
    WHEREAS, Upon Lieutenant Cornett's arrival at the scene, he 
12
requested that a bystander find a pry bar; while waiting for 
13
assistance he ordered the girl to get down on the floor to aid 
14
in her breathing; and

 
15
    WHEREAS, With the arrival of the pry bar, Lieutenant 
16
Cornett began chipping away at the door; a few moments passed 
17
and he broke the door open and Amanda shot out; and

 
18
    WHEREAS, Upon the arrival of the fire department all the 
19
occupants of the house were safe, including Amanda; Lieutenant 
20
Cornett was commended by Virgil Sheets, chairman of the police

commissioners, and the Tilton Village Board for his quick 
2
thinking and outstanding job; therefore, be it

 
3
    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
4
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
5
commend Lieutenant David Cornett on being a hero, thinking of 
6
others before himself, and showing a willingness to risk his 
7
own life to save another; and be it further

 
8
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
9
presented to Lieutenant David Cornett as a symbol of our 
10
respect.
