 | 
| 2 |  |     WHEREAS, In May of 1948, with recognition by the United  | 
| 3 |  | Nations of the need for a Jewish homeland, the State of Israel  | 
| 4 |  | was established as a sovereign and independent nation; and
 | 
| 5 |  |     WHEREAS, The new State of Israel was established in the  | 
| 6 |  | ancient homeland of the Jewish people, the culmination of  | 
| 7 |  | decades of efforts by the modern Zionist movement to resettle  | 
| 8 |  | and reinvigorate the land; and
 | 
| 9 |  |     WHEREAS, The United States was one of the first nations to  | 
| 10 |  | recognize Israel, only 11 minutes after its creation; and
 | 
| 11 |  |     WHEREAS, The State of Israel provided a refuge to Jews who  | 
| 12 |  | survived the horrors of the Holocaust and the evil acts  | 
| 13 |  | committed by the Nazis; and
 | 
| 14 |  |     WHEREAS, Israel has provided the opportunity for Jews from  | 
| 15 |  | all over the world, including immigrants from Ethiopia, the  | 
| 16 |  | former Soviet Union, and from the Arab lands to make new lives  | 
| 17 |  | in their ancient homeland; and
 | 
| 18 |  |     WHEREAS, Israel, home to religious sites sacred to Judaism,  | 
| 19 |  | Christianity, and Islam, is committed to the protection of  | 
| 20 |  | these sites and to freedom of worship; and
 |

| 1 |  |     WHEREAS, The people of Israel have established a  | 
| 2 |  | pluralistic democracy which protects the freedoms cherished by  | 
| 3 |  | the people of the State of Illinois, including freedom of  | 
| 4 |  | speech, freedom of religion, freedom of association, freedom of  | 
| 5 |  | the press, an independent judiciary, and government by the  | 
| 6 |  | consent of its citizens; and
 | 
| 7 |  |     WHEREAS, Israel continues, in a region generally bereft of  | 
| 8 |  | such practices, to serve as a shining model of democratic  | 
| 9 |  | values maintaining gender equality, freedom of sexual  | 
| 10 |  | orientation, and equal rights for all citizens; and
 | 
| 11 |  |     WHEREAS, Israel has a thriving culture and has made  | 
| 12 |  | significant global contributions in the fields of science,  | 
| 13 |  | medicine, and technology; and
 | 
| 14 |  |     WHEREAS, The State of Illinois and the State of Israel have  | 
| 15 |  | developed mutually beneficial economic, cultural, educational,  | 
| 16 |  | trade, and scientific partnerships; therefore, be it
 | 
| 17 |  |     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE  | 
| 18 |  | NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE  | 
| 19 |  | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we recognize the anniversary of  | 
| 20 |  | the establishment of the State of Israel as a significant event  | 
| 21 |  | in providing refuge and a national homeland for the Jewish  | 
|     |

 | 
| 2 |  |     RESOLVED, That we commend the bipartisan commitment of all  | 
| 3 |  | United States presidential administrations and United States  | 
| 4 |  | Congresses since the establishment of the State of Israel in  | 
| 5 |  | 1948 to stand by Israel and work for its security and  | 
| 6 |  | well-being; and be it further
 | 
| 7 |  |     RESOLVED, That we extend our warmest congratulations and  | 
| 8 |  | best wishes to the people of Israel as they celebrate the 60th  | 
| 9 |  | anniversary of their nation's independence.
