| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
| 3 |
| learned with regret of the death of Manzili Jerome Davis on |
| 4 |
| April 18, 2006; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, He was born on July 2, 1984, in Gary, Indiana, to |
| 6 |
| Roella Christine Henderson Davis and Jerome Matthew Davis; he |
| 7 |
| was the adored younger brother of his sisters, Malaika |
| 8 |
| Henderson and Johari Davis; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, He was educated at St. Bride's Elementary School |
| 10 |
| and Mt. Carmel High School, where he was salutatorian of his |
| 11 |
| graduating class, and a member of the scholastic bowl, debate, |
| 12 |
| math competition, and cross country teams; he was also a member |
| 13 |
| of the Forensic Society and the National Honor Society, which |
| 14 |
| he served as president for one year; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, During his time at Mt. Carmel High School, he was |
| 16 |
| involved with the Link Unlimited organization, which provided |
| 17 |
| support systems for African American students in urban areas of |
| 18 |
| Chicago; and
|
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, He went on to study at Princeton University in the |
| 20 |
| Department of Politics and planned on becoming a lawyer; at |
| 21 |
| Princeton, he was involved in the Whig-Cliosophic Society and |
| 22 |
| was a founding member of the Pre-Law Society, which he served |
| 23 |
| as president his sophomore year; he was also a peer academic |
| 24 |
| advisor; and
|
| 25 |
| WHEREAS, He was a quiet person who captured the hearts of |
| 26 |
| those whose lives he touched; he had a sudden wit and an acute |
| 27 |
| intellect; he loved music, intelligent books, and movies that |
| 28 |
| were finely crafted, including foreign and independent films |
| 29 |
| that challenged his independent mind; and
