| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |
| 3 |
| State of Illinois are pleased to recognize the 70th anniversary |
| 4 |
| of Alton V.F.W. Post 1308; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Alton V.F.W. Post 1308 was founded on November 1, |
| 6 |
| 1936; the first meetings were held in the old Turner Hall on |
| 7 |
| Ridge Street in Alton; a few meetings were held in the Old |
| 8 |
| Mineral Springs Hotel; the group eventually settled into its |
| 9 |
| present location on Alby Street in 1970; the building was |
| 10 |
| dedicated by State Sr. Vice Commander Vernon Soukup; and
|
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, The Post purchased a 107-acre farm on Voohrees |
| 12 |
| Lane; a tank that had been given to the Post by the U.S. |
| 13 |
| government was moved to the farm; the Dough-Boy is now on the |
| 14 |
| front lawn of the Post, where the Veterans Day memorial service |
| 15 |
| is held each year; the farm is used by many local organizations |
| 16 |
| for picnics and get-togethers; and
|
| 17 |
| WHEREAS, During the great flood of 1993, the post donated a |
| 18 |
| boat, motor, and trailer to the Salvation Army; over the years, |
| 19 |
| the Post has loaned hundreds of wheel chairs and other hospital |
| 20 |
| equipment to members and auxiliary; and
|
| 21 |
| WHEREAS, Alton V.F.W. Post 1308 is the largest post in the |
| 22 |
| State of Illinois and the thirteenth largest V.F.W. post in the |
| 23 |
| country; the Post Color Guard has led the Memorial Day parade |
| 24 |
| since World War II and the local Halloween parade for many |
| 25 |
| years; and
|
| 26 |
| WHEREAS, The Post Ritual Team provides military funeral |
| 27 |
| services at no charge to any honorably discharged veteran when |
| 28 |
| requested; therefore, be it
