| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |
| 3 |
| State of Illinois are pleased to congratulate Betty Brown of |
| 4 |
| Elgin on being chosen to be interviewed by The History Makers; |
| 5 |
| and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Brown will be the only person from the |
| 7 |
| Northwest suburbs of Chicago to join the 1,200 African |
| 8 |
| Americans from across the United States who have sat down for |
| 9 |
| video interviews with The History Makers; others that have been |
| 10 |
| interviewed include Senator Barack Obama, Dionne Warwick, and |
| 11 |
| the late Ebony publisher, John H. Johnson; and
|
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, The History Makers holds the nation's largest |
| 13 |
| collection of African-American oral histories; based on |
| 14 |
| nominations, it chooses African-American people to interview |
| 15 |
| from all fields, including medicine, media, and politics; and
|
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Brown moved to Elgin with her family when she |
| 17 |
| was six years old; she went on to become the first |
| 18 |
| African-American nurse at St. Joseph Hospital, and she worked |
| 19 |
| as a nursing supervisor for 15 years; following nursing, she |
| 20 |
| became a consultant with a major cosmetics company and was |
| 21 |
| selected by Miglin & Associates for the "Women of Destiny" |
| 22 |
| program, which led to her involvement in the fashion world; she |
| 23 |
| was a member of The Fashion Group International, Inc., of |
| 24 |
| Chicago and became an advocate for peace across the world as a |
| 25 |
| board member; and
|
| 26 |
| WHEREAS, In the 1990s, she covered the society beat for |
| 27 |
| North Shore Magazine, and she has written society news for both |
| 28 |
| the Daily Herald and Courier News; through her work, she's |
| 29 |
| interviewed many celebrities, including Sidney Poitier and Jay |
| 30 |
| Leno; and
