| WHEREAS, On December 4, 2005, Zion Lutheran Church |
| 3 |
| celebrated fifty years in the Village of Deerfield; a festival |
| 4 |
| worship service was held with Bishop Paul R. Landahl of the |
| 5 |
| Metropolitan Chicago Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church |
| 6 |
| in America preaching; in honor of the occasion, the Village |
| 7 |
| Board of Deerfield proclaimed December 4 as "Zion Lutheran |
| 8 |
| Church Day in Deerfield"; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Zion Lutheran Church was founded in 1874 in |
| 10 |
| Highwood, Illinois; a small group of 22 adults held the first |
| 11 |
| worship service on the First Sunday in Advent under the |
| 12 |
| leadership of Pastor Erland Carlsson; they met in homes until |
| 13 |
| 1886, when the first church building was erected; and
|
| 14 |
| WHEREAS, The congregation could not expand its facilities |
| 15 |
| where it was located, and after much research, purchased nearly |
| 16 |
| eight acres at its present location in Deerfield in 1954; the |
| 17 |
| final worship service was held in Highwood on December 4, 1955, |
| 18 |
| and the first service in the newly completed building in |
| 19 |
| Deerfield was held on December 11, 1955; the parsonage, located |
| 20 |
| on the church property, was completed in 1956; the congregation |
| 21 |
| has expanded and renovated its building many times over the |
| 22 |
| past 50 years; and
|
| 23 |
| WHEREAS, Contributing to the well-being of the community |
| 24 |
| has always been an important activity for the members of Zion; |
| 25 |
| they have taken on numerous and varied projects of service over |
| 26 |
| the years; most recently Zion, with the assistance of Holy |
| 27 |
| Cross of Deerfield and B'nai Torah of Highland Park, founded |
| 28 |
| Southeast Lake County Faith in Action, an inter-faith program |
| 29 |
| providing volunteers to assist people to remain in their homes; |
| 30 |
| and
|
| 31 |
| WHEREAS, Zion's current Pastor is the Reverend Mark A. |
