| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives learned with sadness of the death of William A. |
| 4 |
| Norkett of Chicago on October 7, 2005; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, William A. Norkett was born in Chicago to Lucille |
| 6 |
| and Michael Norkett; he lived virtually his entire life in his |
| 7 |
| Rogers Park neighborhood; he attended Hardy Prep School and |
| 8 |
| Loyola Academy in Chicago and graduated from John Carroll |
| 9 |
| University in Cleveland in 1958; and
|
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, Although his dream of attending law school was set |
| 11 |
| aside by an injury he suffered while working on a garbage truck |
| 12 |
| as a teenager, Mr. Norkett enjoyed a long career as an |
| 13 |
| outstanding public servant; he went to work for the State of |
| 14 |
| Illinois as a bridge inspector in 1950; he later worked as a |
| 15 |
| bailiff for the chief judge of the Cook County Circuit Court |
| 16 |
| and managed the Elston Avenue Department of Motor Vehicles |
| 17 |
| facility; in 1971 he was appointed the 49th Ward |
| 18 |
| superintendent; he took his job very seriously, finding |
| 19 |
| resourceful ways to deal with problems with streets, signs, |
| 20 |
| traffic signals, and garbage in the neighborhood; and
|
| 21 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Norkett was dedicated and generous to his |
| 22 |
| community who enjoyed engaging in conversation with people from |
| 23 |
| all walks of life; he was always willing to lend a helping |
| 24 |
| hand; he volunteered countless hours to the special-needs |
| 25 |
| residents of Misericordia, a Catholic charity and he helped |
| 26 |
| numerous strangers from his neighborhood in need of counseling, |
| 27 |
| food, and, clothing; and
|
| 28 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Norkett treasured his family and friends and |
| 29 |
| his loss will be felt by many, especially, his wife, Barbara; |
| 30 |
| his daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Beth and Charles Fox and |
| 31 |
| Katie Norkett and Mike Mensiage; his sons and daughter-in-law, |
