| WHEREAS, The Abraham Lincoln Centre will celebrate 100 |
| 3 |
| years of service at its annual Humanitarian Award Dinner on |
| 4 |
| Friday, October 7, 2005; the theme for the dinner is |
| 5 |
| "Celebrating a Century of Preparing People for Life"; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, The organization will present special awards in |
| 7 |
| the categories of community partner, corporate, government, |
| 8 |
| and humanitarian to recognize those who have been committed to |
| 9 |
| providing the support that is needed for the continued success |
| 10 |
| of the 100-year old agency; this year's honorees include the |
| 11 |
| Angelo Geocaris Family (Humanitarian Award), the Walgreen |
| 12 |
| Company (the Jenkin Lloyd Jones Corporate Award), the Horace |
| 13 |
| Mann Ambridge Neighborhood Improvement Organization (the |
| 14 |
| Cordell Reed Community Partnership Award), and Alderman Toni |
| 15 |
| Preckwinkle, 4th Ward (The Angelo Geocaris Government Award); |
| 16 |
| and
|
| 17 |
| WHEREAS, The Abraham Lincoln Centre (ALC) was founded in |
| 18 |
| 1905 as an outreach ministry of the All Souls Unitarian Church; |
| 19 |
| during the early years, agency activities were focused on the |
| 20 |
| masses of European immigrants who had settled in the area; the |
| 21 |
| agency became a facility that conducted classes to teach |
| 22 |
| American customs, the English language, and a meeting place to |
| 23 |
| visit with fellow countrymen; and
|
| 24 |
| WHEREAS, In 2005, as the ALC celebrates 100 years of |
| 25 |
| service to Chicago's south side communities and residents, the |
| 26 |
| communities are changing; major redevelopment activities are |
| 27 |
| relocating long-time residents from the area and bringing an |
| 28 |
| influx of new residents; the agency is planning now in order to |
| 29 |
| be instrumental in empowering both the newly arriving and |
| 30 |
| remaining residents with skills to improve their well-being, |
| 31 |
| thereby fulfilling its mission "To serve Chicago's greater |
| 32 |
| south side communities by assisting the residents in their |
