| WHEREAS, February 17, 2005, is the 100th Anniversary of the |
| 3 |
| dedication of Frances Elizabeth Caroline Willard's statue in |
| 4 |
| Statuary Hall in the Capitol of the United States; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Said statue of Frances Willard was offered to the |
| 6 |
| United States by the State of Illinois and accepted with thanks |
| 7 |
| by the Congress of the United States; and
|
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Frances Willard was an incomparable organizer, |
| 9 |
| leader, founder of women's organizations, protector of the |
| 10 |
| home, agitator for the rights of women and children, |
| 11 |
| suffragist, temperance and prohibition advocate, friend of |
| 12 |
| labor, author, editor, lecturer, educator, and distinguished |
| 13 |
| worker for peace and human welfare; and
|
| 14 |
| WHEREAS, Frances Willard today stands as a symbol among the |
| 15 |
| splendid women of her day, in Illinois and the world, who had |
| 16 |
| to fight to prove that both responsibility for and guidance of |
| 17 |
| human affairs belong to women
as well as men; and
|
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, The State of Illinois, in presenting the statue of |
| 19 |
| Frances Willard to the United States to be placed among the |
| 20 |
| figures of the greatest men that have lived in the United |
| 21 |
| States, has honored itself, has justly honored a great woman, |
| 22 |
| and has paid tribute to all American womanhood; therefore, be |
| 23 |
| it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 25 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 26 |
| March be known as Magnificent Mentor Month, a time to remember |
| 27 |
| Frances Willard and all those women, the Magnificent Mentors, |
| 28 |
| who proved that both the responsibility for and guidance of |
| 29 |
| human affairs belong to women as well as men.
