| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |
| 3 |
| State of Illinois congratulate Rotary International on its |
| 4 |
| 100th anniversary; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, To celebrate Rotary's centennial anniversary, the |
| 6 |
| organization is taking time to reflect on all its |
| 7 |
| accomplishments over the years; throughout 2005, there will be |
| 8 |
| several events and volunteer efforts that will carry on the |
| 9 |
| spirit of service to the community that began so many years |
| 10 |
| ago; and
|
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, Rotary International was established in Chicago |
| 12 |
| on February 23, 1905 by Paul P. Harris; Mr. Harris founded |
| 13 |
| Rotary International with the mission of promoting benevolence |
| 14 |
| amongst club members and the community; as Rotary International |
| 15 |
| began to expand, so did its mission of service to the |
| 16 |
| community; with a motto of "Service Above Self", they inspire |
| 17 |
| members to provide humanitarian service, encourage high |
| 18 |
| ethical standards, and promote good will and peace throughout |
| 19 |
| the world; and
|
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, The Rotary Foundation, a not-for-profit |
| 21 |
| organization, was formed in 1928 for the purpose of funding the |
| 22 |
| many projects sponsored by Rotary International; today, |
| 23 |
| contributions to the foundation total more than $80 million |
| 24 |
| dollars annually; this money supports a wide range of programs |
| 25 |
| that enable citizens of the world to function better within |
| 26 |
| their communities; and
|
| 27 |
| WHEREAS, In 1985, Rotary International began one of its |
| 28 |
| most ambitious missions, and that was to eradicate the world of |
| 29 |
| polio; through their program, Polio Plus, they coordinated with |
| 30 |
| the World Health Organization, U.S. Centers for Disease Control |
| 31 |
| and Prevention, and UNICEF to provide polio immunizations to |
