| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | ||||||
| 3 | learned with regret of the death of Ed Marciniak of Chicago on | ||||||
| 4 | Sunday, May 23, 2004; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, A life-long Chicago resident, Mr. Marciniak was | ||||||
| 6 | born on December 17, 1917 to the late Walter and Hattie | ||||||
| 7 | Marciniak who instilled in their three children the values of | ||||||
| 8 | kindness, respect, tolerance, and compassion for all people, | ||||||
| 9 | the understanding of a strong work ethic, and a steadfast | ||||||
| 10 | belief in God; and | ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Ed Marciniak began his life's work of advocating | ||||||
| 12 | and speaking out for social justice issues as a college student | ||||||
| 13 | when he joined the Catholic Worker movement in 1938; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Ed Marciniak was dedicated to his professional | ||||||
| 15 | work and the issues he believed in, but his first love and | ||||||
| 16 | life's priority was always his family, his loving wife | ||||||
| 17 | Virginia, their four daughters Kate, Christina, Francesca, and | ||||||
| 18 | Claudia, and his eight grandchildren; and | ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Ed Marciniak was a man of many talents and | ||||||
| 20 | excelled in several vocations; he served as a professor at | ||||||
| 21 | Loyola University, as publisher of Work magazine, as | ||||||
| 22 | international vice-president of the Newspaper Guild, as | ||||||
| 23 | director of Chicago's Commission on Human Relations, as deputy | ||||||
| 24 | commissioner of Development and Planning for the City of | ||||||
| 25 | Chicago, as a consultant to Federal agencies, and as the author | ||||||
| 26 | of countless books and articles for local and national | ||||||
| 27 | publications; and | ||||||
| 28 | WHEREAS, Ed Marciniak was a champion of a number of social | ||||||
| 29 | justice issues but was particularly known for his work for | ||||||
| 30 | civil rights; he taught the first college course in Chicago on | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | race relations in the 1940s; he was a special consultant to the | ||||||
| 2 | U.S. Civil Rights Commission, and he was known for his work on | ||||||
| 3 | housing and development issues; and | ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, As a recognized national expert on public housing, | ||||||
| 5 | Mr. Marciniak never wavered from his commitment to promote and | ||||||
| 6 | work for quality affordable housing and sensible neighborhood | ||||||
| 7 | development that would benefit all community residents; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, In 1973, Ed Marciniak became the president of the | ||||||
| 9 | Institute of Urban Life, a post he held until his death; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, While at the institute, Mr. Marciniak published | ||||||
| 11 | the following books: "Reclaiming the Inner City", "Reviving an | ||||||
| 12 | Inner-City Community", "Reversing Urban Decline", "Non-Profits | ||||||
| 13 | with Hard Hats", and "The Role of Chicago's Private Schools in | ||||||
| 14 | Neighborhood Revitalization"; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Ed Marciniak was a man of deep faith who | ||||||
| 16 | contributed to his church in a myriad of ways; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Ed Marciniak gave his time and resources to over | ||||||
| 18 | 150 community organizations by serving on their boards, | ||||||
| 19 | including the Chicago Urban League, Neighborhood Housing | ||||||
| 20 | Services, Community Investment Corporation, the City Club, and | ||||||
| 21 | the Illinois Humane Society for Children; and
| ||||||
| 22 | WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Ed Marciniak approached his | ||||||
| 23 | teaching and work with the belief that change is possible; he | ||||||
| 24 | demonstrated confidence in the goodness of humanity and a | ||||||
| 25 | willingness to help individuals realize their personal power | ||||||
| 26 | and reach their fullest potential; and
| ||||||
| 27 | WHEREAS, Ed Marciniak was loved and respected by the | ||||||
| 28 | thousands of students, colleagues, and friends whose lives he | ||||||
| 29 | touched; therefore, be it | ||||||

| 1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
| 2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 3 | Ed Marciniak, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family, | ||||||
| 4 | friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
| ||||||
| 5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 6 | presented to the family of Ed Marciniak as an expression of our | ||||||
| 7 | sincere condolences.
