| 2 |  |     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the  | 
| 3 |  | State of Illinois
were saddened to learn of the death of  | 
| 4 |  | Lovance (Vance) Francis Ashley on
Friday, October 3, 2003; and
 
 | 
| 5 |  |     WHEREAS, Lovance Francis Ashley was born on October 27,  | 
| 6 |  | 1926, in Pass
Christian, Mississippi to William and Louella  | 
| 7 |  | Ashley; he attended Randolph High
School and graduated in 1945;  | 
| 8 |  | and
 
 | 
| 9 |  |     WHEREAS, Following graduation, he was drafted into the U.S.  | 
| 10 |  | Navy, where he
served his country honorably; he moved to  | 
| 11 |  | Chicago upon completion of his
service, where he married Jean  | 
| 12 |  | Margaret Geddes on January 17, 1948, at St.
Anselms Church; and
 
 | 
| 13 |  |     WHEREAS, Mr. Ashley attended Wilson Junior College and  | 
| 14 |  | various technical
institutes; for 40 years, he worked for the  | 
| 15 |  | Chicago Transit Authority,
beginning as a streetcar conductor  | 
| 16 |  | and ending his career as a legal claims
investigator; during  | 
| 17 |  | his long tenure at CTA, he worked various part-time jobs
that  | 
| 18 |  | included Weiss Hardware Store and Marshall Field's; and
 
 | 
| 19 |  |     WHEREAS, Mr. Ashley enjoyed being active and was involved  | 
| 20 |  | in bowling, tennis,
walking, playing bridge, strength training  | 
| 21 |  | with his personal trainer, and
cavorting with his  | 
| 22 |  | great-granddaughter, Karyn Elise; he belonged to the Jolly
 | 
| 23 |  | Seniors and Louis Rogers Bowling Clubs, the CTA Breakfast Club,  | 
| 24 |  | the Couple's
Club, and the Bridge Club; and
 
 | 
| 25 |  |     WHEREAS, Mr. Ashley was committed to community service; he  | 
| 26 |  | volunteered at
Little Company of Mary Hospital and Chicago  | 
| 27 |  | State University upon his
retirement from the CTA; he was known  | 
| 28 |  | to always be supportive of family and
friends and would lend a  | 
| 29 |  | hand whenever and wherever necessary; he was a man of
strong  | 
| 30 |  | convictions who truly believed in and followed the teachings of  |
