| WHEREAS, St. Bernard Hospital in Chicago is celebrating a |
| 3 |
| century of continuous service to the Englewood community; and
|
| 4 |
| WHEREAS, St. Bernard Hotel Dieu Hospital was founded in |
| 5 |
| 1903 by seven sisters from the Religious Hospitallers of St. |
| 6 |
| Joseph, a French Canadian order; the hospital treated its first |
| 7 |
| patient in December of 1905 and has operated from the same |
| 8 |
| building on West 64th Street ever since; the hospital's name |
| 9 |
| was changed in 1962 to St. Bernard Hospital; and
|
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, St. Bernard added a patient care wing in 1976 and |
| 11 |
| is modernizing all inpatient rooms and implementing |
| 12 |
| point-of-care electronic charting;
St. Bernard's emergency |
| 13 |
| care facility, which opened in 1983 and was renovated in 2001, |
| 14 |
| treats about 33,000 patients annually; in 2003, the hospital |
| 15 |
| introduced a pediatric mobile health unit to give inoculations |
| 16 |
| and medical services to schoolchildren throughout the |
| 17 |
| community;
and |
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, St. Bernard has 700 staff members and treats over |
| 19 |
| 50,000 patients annually, providing over $5 million in free |
| 20 |
| care to those unable to afford needed services; the Englewood |
| 21 |
| community is reviving, thanks to the leadership of institutions |
| 22 |
| like St. Bernard; and
|
| 23 |
| WHEREAS, In 1999, St. Bernard formed a housing development |
| 24 |
| corporation and reclaimed seven abandoned acres across from the |
| 25 |
| hospital as Bernard Place, Englewood's first housing |
| 26 |
| development in over three decades;
Phase I has been completed |
| 27 |
| with 63 fully-occupied new homes; work on Phase II will begin |
| 28 |
| in 2005; Bernard Place has received the Richard H. Driehaus |
| 29 |
| Foundation Award for Outstanding Non-Profit Neighborhood Real |
| 30 |
| Estate Project; and
|
