| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, Reality television has become a popular part of |
| 3 |
| broadcasting for all major networks; and
|
| 4 |
| WHEREAS, On Wednesday, July 28, 2004, United Paramount |
| 5 |
| Network will air the two-hour premiere of the television |
| 6 |
| reality series "Amish in the City"; and |
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, Amish youth will be portrayed in the "rumspringa", |
| 8 |
| a time when Amish people 16 years or older are allowed to break |
| 9 |
| free from their roots to see the world and determine if they |
| 10 |
| would choose to return to Amish culture; they will be depicted |
| 11 |
| living in a home with other young people who are accustomed to |
| 12 |
| "city life"; and
|
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, While the First Amendment to the United States |
| 14 |
| Constitution protects the right to free expression, caution |
| 15 |
| should be exercised concerning the beliefs and practices of |
| 16 |
| specific groups of people; the show "Amish in the City" appears |
| 17 |
| to single out the beliefs and practices of the Amish as a |
| 18 |
| source for humor and to belittle the Amish community; |
| 19 |
| therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 21 |
| NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
| 22 |
| express strong concern over the exploitation of the Amish |
| 23 |
| community and religion as will be depicted in the program |
| 24 |
| "Amish in the City"; and be it further
|
| 25 |
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to |
| 26 |
| the United Paramount Network.
