| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Edwin |
| 4 |
| "Max" Kurland; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Edwin Kurland was born and raised the youngest of |
| 6 |
| three children on the southwest side of Chicago; he attended |
| 7 |
| Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and Quigley Seminary |
| 8 |
| before receiving a sociology degree from Loyola University in |
| 9 |
| 1954; after a tour in the army, he began his coaching career at |
| 10 |
| Blessed Sacrament; and
|
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, Affectionately nicknamed "Max", he joined the St. |
| 12 |
| Patrick faculty in 1954 as assistant to Coach Dick Triptow; |
| 13 |
| when Triptow left in 1959, Max began his career as head |
| 14 |
| basketball coach that spanned over 35 years; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, With 653 wins, he ranks as one of the top ten |
| 16 |
| coaches in Illinois history; he was named East Suburban |
| 17 |
| Catholic Conference Coach of the Year three times while winning |
| 18 |
| ten conference championships, eleven State Regional titles, |
| 19 |
| and one Sectional championship; his teams also won fourteen |
| 20 |
| Thanksgiving Tourneys, two Chicagoland Prep Tourneys, and six |
| 21 |
| Christmas Tournament titles; and |
| 22 |
| WHEREAS, Max Kurland was inducted into the Illinois |
| 23 |
| Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1980, as well as the Chicago |
| 24 |
| Catholic League Coaches Hall of Fame in 1994; he also received |
| 25 |
| the coveted Achievement Award from the Ed Kelly Giant Awards |
| 26 |
| Sports Program in 1994; to top off his prestigious career, |
| 27 |
| Coach Kurland became a charter member of the Shamrock Hall of |
| 28 |
| Fame in 1995; and
|
| 29 |
| WHEREAS, Outside of basketball, Coach Kurland has been |
| 30 |
| recognized by the Christian Brothers, receiving the LaSallian |
