| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives wish to congratulate Jan Monken on her |
| 4 |
| retirement as director of the Centralia Chapter of the American |
| 5 |
| Red Cross on June 30, 2004; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, In 1975, Ms. Monken became involved with the |
| 7 |
| Centralia Red Cross and also took on the role of blood |
| 8 |
| procurement chairwoman, an entirely voluntary position; she |
| 9 |
| began as chapter director in December 1978; and
|
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, Her duties as director include coordinating every |
| 11 |
| service the Red Cross provides, such as the Quality of Life |
| 12 |
| program, the Health and Safety program, Relay for Life, and |
| 13 |
| disaster assistance; and
|
| 14 |
| WHEREAS, Her dedication to blood procurement is evident by |
| 15 |
| the numbers; when she began collecting, the average was 600 |
| 16 |
| units of blood per year; now, the average units collected are |
| 17 |
| 3,600; and |
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, Disasters such as the September 11, 2001 attacks |
| 19 |
| and the tornadoes that hit Centralia in 1998 and 2002 are |
| 20 |
| memories that Ms. Monken will carry with her forever; and
|
| 21 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Monken has already signed on for another term |
| 22 |
| on the St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital Board and is actively |
| 23 |
| involved in the Centralia Community Benevolent Association's |
| 24 |
| Food Pantry Board, so Centralia will continue to benefit from |
| 25 |
| this amazing woman's presence; and
|
| 26 |
| WHEREAS, She is retiring to spend quality time with her |
| 27 |
| family and friends; therefore, be it |
| 28 |
