| WHEREAS, Each year in Illinois, violent acts claim the |
| 3 |
| lives of many Illinois residents; the reduction of violence |
| 4 |
| needs to be a priority for the State of Illinois; information |
| 5 |
| related to the incidents of violent death can assist health |
| 6 |
| care professionals, law enforcement officials, and other |
| 7 |
| government officials in developing public policy to reduce |
| 8 |
| violence against Illinois residents; and |
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is |
| 10 |
| considering applications to expand the National Violent Death |
| 11 |
| Reporting System (NVDRS); and
|
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, Data related to violent deaths are typically |
| 13 |
| housed in multiple agencies and are not shared among agencies |
| 14 |
| for analysis, resulting in incomplete information and a |
| 15 |
| distorted understanding of local, state, and national issues |
| 16 |
| related to violent deaths; and
|
| 17 |
| WHEREAS, The NVDRS brings together data from all agencies |
| 18 |
| investigating violent deaths to allow the fullest possible |
| 19 |
| understanding of trends in violent deaths from data that is |
| 20 |
| already being collected; and
|
| 21 |
| WHEREAS, Since 2002 the Center for Disease Control and |
| 22 |
| Prevention has funded 13 states in the first phase of |
| 23 |
| development of the National Violent Death Reporting System and |
| 24 |
| this year will fund 2 or 3 additional states; and
|
| 25 |
| WHEREAS, The Illinois Department of Public Health has |
| 26 |
| agreed to participate in the 2004 application for funding, with |
| 27 |
| the Chicago Department of Public Health taking the lead in the |
| 28 |
| first phase of the Illinois Violent Death Reporting System |
| 29 |
| (IVDRS) and the Child Health Data Lab at Children's Memorial |
| 30 |
| Hospital playing a supporting role by evaluating the system and |
