SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, On January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
3Incorporated was founded by Ethel Hedgemon Lyle and eight
4other collegiate women with the mission to cultivate and
5encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote
6unity and friendship among college women, to study and help
7alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to
8improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive
9interest in college life, and to be of "Service to All
10Mankind"; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has a
12rich history of social action; in 1915, Alpha Kappa Alpha
13Sorority, Incorporated hosted its first political action
14conference with human rights activist and Illinois Congressman
15Martin B. Madden as the speaker, marking its commitment to
16progress through advocacy, education, social progress, and
17political engagement; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Soaring to greater heights of service and
19sisterhood, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated
20established its headquarters on the South Side of Chicago in
211949, becoming more complex, while expanding to mobilize over
22390,000 initiated members in 1,120 chapters in 50 U.S. states
23and territories and 15 nations, focusing on advocacy and

1service projects aimed at improving socioeconomic, racial,
2political, and environmental issues, further amplifying its
3influence; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated's
5diverse collaborative work throughout the United States and
6including, but not limited to, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada,
7the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and the United Arab Emirates
8integrates an elevated level of personal engagement with the
9strong bonds of sisterhood and a productive network of
10community partners; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated's annual
12advocacy day event is an opportunity for its members to meet
13and discuss proposed legislation with Illinois lawmakers,
14engage in educational workshops concentrated on the Illinois
15Legislative Black Caucus four key pillars of Illinois
16government, and explore ways to enhance civic engagement; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Illinois is home to 50 Alpha Kappa Alpha
18Sorority, Incorporated chapters, of which 18 are located on
19college and university campuses and 32 are alumnae chapters
20located in communities throughout the State; and
 
21    WHEREAS, The Illinois chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha
22Sorority, Incorporated along with chapters located throughout

1Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota,
2Wisconsin, and St. Louis and Cape Girardeau, Missouri are
3designated as the sorority's Central Region, and this region
4is home to 94 empowered and engaged chapters focused on
5advocacy and service; and
 
6    WHEREAS, On May 6, 2026, Illinois members of Alpha Kappa
7Alpha Sorority, Incorporated will participate in Alpha Kappa
8Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Day at the Illinois State
9Capitol; and
 
10    WHEREAS, In a collective effort to advance the priorities
11of the respective communities in which they serve, the
12Illinois delegation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
13Incorporated will be joined by the Illinois delegation of
14Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated for Alpha Kappa Alpha
15Sorority, Incorporated Day at the Illinois State Capitol for
16the empowerment of the people; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare May 6, 2026
19as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Day in the State
20of Illinois.
