SENATE RESOLUTION

2    WHEREAS, Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed
3cancer among women worldwide and remains the second leading
4cause of cancer-related deaths among women in the United
5States; and

6    WHEREAS, An estimated 319,750 Americans will be diagnosed
7with invasive breast cancer in 2025, and tragically, 42,680
8lives will be lost to the disease, equivalent to 117 lives per
9day, with 98% of those deaths being due to metastatic breast
10cancer (MBC); and

11    WHEREAS, MBC occurs when breast cancer spreads beyond the
12breast to other parts of the body, including the bones, liver,
13lungs, and brain; despite advances in early detection and
14treatment, approximately 30% of early-stage breast cancers
15will eventually metastasize with no known cure; and

16    WHEREAS, Individuals with MBC face a median life
17expectancy of approximately three years, yet less than 10% of
18U.S. breast cancer research funding is dedicated to studying
19this terminal stage of the disease; increasing investment in
20MBC-specific research is critical to transforming it from a
21terminal illness into a chronic, manageable condition; and

SR0402- 2 -LRB104 15162 ECR 28306 r

1    WHEREAS, METAvivor Research and Support is a national
2nonprofit dedicated to funding stage IV MBC research,
3supporting patients, and advocating for equitable distribution
4of breast cancer research dollars, seeking to increase MBC
5funding to at least 30% of all breast cancer research; and

6    WHEREAS, Racial disparities persist in breast cancer
7outcomes; while white women have slightly higher incidence
8rates of breast cancer, Black women are 40% more likely to die
9from the disease, and breast cancer remains the leading cause
10of cancer-related death for Hispanic women; addressing these
11inequities through research, education, and access to care is
12essential; and

13    WHEREAS, The #LightUpMBC global campaign, in partnership
14with METAvivor, illuminates over 117 landmarks across the
15world in the MBC awareness colors of teal, green, and pink on
16October 13th of each year; this campaign honors lives lost to
17MBC, amplifies patient voices, and raises crucial funds for
18MBC research; and

19    WHEREAS, While the pink ribbon is widely recognized for
20early-stage breast cancer awareness, it does not represent
21those living with stage IV breast cancer; the MBC awareness
22ribbon, a tricolor combination of teal to represent healing,
23green to represent hope, and pink to represent the origin of
