SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Genetic counselors empower patients and their
3families with vital healthcare information, guidance, and
4emotional support to help them understand their family
5history, evaluate genetic testing options, and make informed
6choices based on test results; and
 
7    WHEREAS, There are more than 150 certified genetic
8counselors working in prenatal, fertility, pediatric,
9metabolic, cardiovascular, neurological, and cancer care in
10Illinois; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Many people benefit from increased genetic
12sequencing research and genetic counseling, including
13individuals with a condition linked to a specific gene or
14those who have a family history of an inherited disease; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The 5,000 genetic counselors across the country
16streamline the healthcare industry by ensuring the right tests
17are being ordered, avoiding costly and unnecessary expenses
18and tests, by helping patients and providers understand
19complex test results and how to best use this information, by
20helping consult with potential parents on the intimidating
21prospect of passing on inherited diseases, by sharing
22information with family members, and by providing

1recommendations for community support services; therefore, be
2it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare November
513, 2025 as Genetic Counselor Appreciation Day in the State of
6Illinois; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That we recognize that the sequencing of the
8human genome is one of the most significant scientific
9accomplishments in the past 100 years and express our support
10for genetic counselors, who are using this research to improve
11the lives of many throughout the State.
