SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Matthew Patrick "Matt" Jones of
4Edwards, who passed away on April 26, 2025; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Matt Jones was born in Pekin on September 30,
61965; he graduated from Pekin Community High School in 1983;
7he received an associate's degree from Illinois Central
8College; he earned his bachelor's degree and Juris Doctor from
9the University of Illinois, completing his education in 1991;
10during college, he served as a national officer for the honor
11society Phi Theta Kappa and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon
12Fraternity; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Matt Jones served as an intern for the late
14Illinois Governor James T. Thompson through the Michael Curry
15Summer Internship Program; he worked as an assistant state's
16attorney in Peoria County before joining the legal counsel
17team of Illinois Senate President Pate Philip, where he
18developed expertise in Illinois' criminal code; he later
19worked in the private sector as a lobbyist with Chicago-based
20law firms Sidley Austin LLP and Altheimer & Gray, and he
21practiced privately at Johnson, Bunce, and Noble, P.C. in
22Peoria; for over 15 years, he served as associate director of
23the Office of the Illinois Appellate Prosecutor and as an

1adjunct professor at the University of Illinois College of
2Law; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Matt Jones contributed generously to Phi Theta
4Kappa and the Peoria Rotary North Club, among other
5organizations; he also enjoyed acting with local community
6theater groups, including Cornstock and Peoria Players, and he
7was especially proud of his work in productions of You Can't
8Take It with You, Damn Yankees, Mister Roberts, and A Few Good
9Men; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Matt Jones served his community in many ways,
11including as president of the PTO, a speech coach, and a scout
12volunteer; he also helped his neighborhood through dressing up
13as the Easter Bunny, and he assisted in his children's
14involvement in lacrosse and choir; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Matt Jones was named to the 40 Leaders Under
16Forty list by InterBusiness Issues magazine in 2001, honored
17as one of the Ten Outstanding Young People of Illinois by the
18Illinois Jaycees in 2003, and received the Distinguished
19Community Service Award for his longtime volunteerism by the
20Peoria County Bar Association in 2012; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Matt Jones was known for his kindness, wit,
22generosity, and his exceptional ability to cultivate

1meaningful, bipartisan criminal justice reform; he will be
2remembered as a devoted father and husband who considered his
3family his greatest blessing; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Matt Jones was preceded in death by an unborn
5child and his father, C. W. "Mike" Jones; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Matt Jones is survived by his wife of 20 years,
7Sandra Denise "Sandy" Gallant-Jones; his children, Benjamin
8Ryan Jones and Emersyn Rhys Jones; his mother, Sandra S.
9Jones; his sister, Lisa (Dave Scott) Jones; his half-siblings,
10Michael (Debra) Jones and Catherine Jones; his niece and
11nephews; and his extended family; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Matthew Patrick "Matt" Jones and extend our sincere
15condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
16him; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Matt Jones as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
