SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Arthur Earl Spiegel of Springfield,
4who passed away on March 4, 2025; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Arthur Spiegel, the son of Rev. Dr. Clarence and
6Gertrude Spiegel, was born in Akron, Ohio on January 23, 1929;
7he and his family moved to Springfield in 1938; he graduated
8from Trinity Lutheran School in 1942 and Lanphier High School
9(LHS) in 1946, and he was later inducted into the LHS Hall of
10Fame in 2019; he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October 1948; he
11was later drafted into the U.S. Army, and he was honorably
12discharged in December 1952; after briefly attending the
13school before his military service, he returned to Illinois
14State University in 1953, receiving his Bachelor of Science in
15Education in January 1956 and his Master of Science in Public
16School Administration in 1961; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Arthur Spiegel began his teaching career at
18Springfield High School; he later worked as a teacher and
19principal at Sherman Elementary School during the 1965-1966
20school year; he served as principal at Athens High School from
211967 to 1979 and as superintendent of Athens Community Unit
22School District 213 from 1969 to 1971; during these years, he
23served on the board of directors of the Illinois State

1University Alumni Association; he began working for the
2Illinois Secretary of State in 1971, remaining in that office
3for 12 years; he then served as utility property manager at
4City Water, Light & Power (CWLP) for eight years, retiring in
51991; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Arthur Spiegel was elected as charter president
7of the Kiwanis Club, Springfield North in 1965 and lieutenant
8governor of Division 11, Illinois-Eastern Iowa District of
9Kiwanis International in 1970; he also served as a counselor
10to the Kiwanis Lanphier High School Key Club; he served as
11scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 47, Trinity Lutheran Church,
12and he was also a member of the Land of Lincoln Scout Council,
13serving as chairman of the School Night for Cubing; he later
14served as cub scoutmaster for Troop 20, Our Savior's Lutheran
15Church; he was a member of the Land of Lincoln Barbershop Choir
16and the Illinois Symphony Choir; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Arthur Spiegel enjoyed playing the piano at
18nursing homes, high-rise apartment buildings, church
19functions, and Kiwanis Clubs in the Springfield area; in
20retirement, he played the piano at Concordia Village, where he
21also served as charter president of the Independent Resident
22Council; and
 
23    WHEREAS, Arthur Spiegel committed to his faith at an early

1age, being baptized on February 10, 1929, and he was a life
2member of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Arthur Spiegel was preceded in death by his
4parents; his daughter, Cheryl (Gum); his brothers, Walter and
5Fred; and his sisters, Helen (Royal) and Ruth (Bojarzin); and
 
6    WHEREAS, Arthur Spiegel is survived by his wife, Jean; his
7daughter, Kim (Ed) Thayer; his stepson, Ed (Sharon) Curtis;
8his stepdaughter, Nancy Jackson; eight grandchildren; and 15
9great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12Arthur Earl Spiegel and extend our sincere condolences to his
13family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
14further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Arthur Spiegel as an expression of
17our deepest sympathy.
